Chartwell not only became the family home and a beautiful venue for entertaining guests, but also Churchill's cherished country retreat and a constant source of inspiration until his death in 1965. Churchill and Clementine had bought the house in 1922 – a purchase that was made possible by an unexpected inheritance from a distant cousin – and were to live there for 40 years.

The Goldfish Pool at Chartwell depicts one of the series of water gardens near the house at Chartwell, where he especially enjoyed feeding the golden orfe, whose descendants still swim in the pool at Chartwell. What’s interesting is that this was painted on the cusp of the beginnings of World War II. Chartwell is considered his own personal Garden of Eden. 7 The following month, the first public exhibition of his paintings was held at the Galerie Druet fr in Paris, with Churchill exhibiting under his pseudonym of 'Charles Morin'. Shown the reproduction, Martin Hammer, Professor of History and Philosophy of Art at the University of Kent, said the work was true to Sutherland’s original and should be exhibited. 1920s Churchill became Secretary of State for the Colonies in February 1921. His workalthough viewed as amateurish during his timeis well crafted and comparable to the great impressionists. He suggested: “There could be a public debate about its eventual fate should it be hung as intended in the House of Parliament, or should it be destroyed like the original?” In addition to these many skills, he also had a love of painting. “The National Portrait Gallery has one of the original sketches for the work that was destroyed, so it would feel appropriate to me if our recreation of this lost masterpiece was to go on show there.”

Churchill scholars say the painting, recreated by Factum Arte, a Madrid-based group of artists and technicians, should hang in Parliament’s Westminster Hall, where the original was unveiled.
